Voters To Decide Pollock/Mobridge Consolidation

It's up to voters in Pollock to decide whether its school should consolidate with Mobridge. If approved, the Pollock school building would keep its K-12 students the first year. After that, the school would stay open for elementary school students as there’s six of them. The older students would go to Mobridge. The Pollock School District has had to be efficient over the years. "I teach everything from normal art classes to junior high exploratory to video editing, desktop publishing, computer applications and supervised distance learning classes," Waynette Geigle said. So in her 16 years of teaching in Pollock, Geigle has seen many students come through her class year after year, every year, K-12. "I know if they have reading problems or certain educational challenges and so I can devise my teaching to meet those needs," Geigle said. But now that total enrolment numbers have dropped to almost 50, the money coming in isn't enough to keep up. "As far as a budget is concerned for next year, we don't feel we can meet a budget so we couldn't operate on our own for another year," school CEO Wayne Hanson said. So, student now have to wait for voters to decide where they'll go to school and their teachers will work out their futures after that. "It kind of depends what that teaching assignment would be but I would like to, yes, continue teaching in the area," Geigle said. The one thing known for certain: the current Pollock school district won't be around much longer, efficient or not. People will vote on the issue February 26.

Brad Mayer Of Norwin

Why did you apply to be a Skylights Sideline Shooter? I applied to be a Skylights Sideline Shooter because I love video production. Filming and editing allow me to express my creative and artistic side and show people my passion for video. When I heard about the opportunity to work for WPXI I immediately decided that this job would be perfect for me.

What do you do in your spare time? I do a lot of extra-curricular activities in school. I am President of FBLA, Senior Class Vice President, and a member of the Varsity Swim team. I am also a member of clubs such as Student Council, Interact, DECA, and National Honor Society. When I am not doing school activities I enjoy volunteering and doing community service work. I also currently have two jobs which I enjoy very much.

What do you plan to do after high school? I plan to attend a 4 year college to study either business or medicine.

Dumpster Divers Go Mainstream In Thrifty Germany

Sven Brylla has been furnishing his apartments for years with discarded furniture, wood and fittings snagged off the streets of Berlin.

In his kitchen stands a fridge so old that it predates electricity. Meltwater from a metal icebox once ran between the panels of the wooden cabinet, cooling its contents. Now it's his cupboard.

His kitchen table is a gnarled old workbench. He found his favorite armchair at a garbage dump. His revolving inventory of street junk has included 20 vintage radios and half a dozen prewar bicycles made in the USSR.

In many other countries, dumpster divers like Mr. Brylla would be written off as eccentrics. In Germany, he's just a normal 36-year-old graphic printer brought up to look down on wasting money on new things when sturdy old stand-bys are there for the taking.
