A few thoughts in the aftermath of that Syracuse University basketball ...

With the exception of a single clipped response, he looked reporters in the eye and spoke in complete and expansive sentences, painful as that might have been. And there was no macho nonsense about him. No bravado. No posturing. Boeheim searched me out one day before the season began and predicted that I'd really like Jonny Flynn, and he was right.

As for Boeheim, I'll grant him his despair and/or anger. But he's the head coach, the figurehead, the spokesman. And he's been on the job for 32 seasons now. So, he decorated himself in little glory by refusing to field any questions after the game he called the "most disappointing" of his career had ended. We all slip here and there, I know. And Boeheim slipped on Saturday. He had a duty to speak on behalf of his program and he didn't, and it made for bad form.

Saints battle for point at Plymouth

Peter Halmosi tried his luck from just inside the Saints half on 11 minutes but it was a comfortable catch for Kelvin Davis.

But Wright-Phillips atoned for his earlier miss when he gave Saints the lead on 12 minutes.

Alexander Ostlund played a long ball from the right into Wright-Phillips whose run took him in behind the Plymouth defence. He took the ball in his stride superbly and pushed into the area and when McCormick came out to try and stop him Wright-Phillips delicately lifted it over him and into the far corner for 1-0.

After a lively start the game started to get a little more bogged down in the midfield area.

Vignal decided to have a pop at goal on 25 minutes but from 30 yards slashed his effort high and wide.

Darren Powell was the first man booked for a foul on Norris after he had robbed him of the ball and broken away.

Discovery May Increase Treatment Options For Inherited Metabolic ...

The study was published online February 5 in the February 2008 edition (Volume 6, Issue 2) of the journal PLoS Biology.

The research team found that the hypertension drugs diltiazem and verapamil increased the overall function of mutant lysosomal enzymes associated with the conditions Gaucher disease, fN-mannosidosis, and type IIIA mucopolysaccharidosis in patient-derived cell lines. The drugs worked by reprogramming the innate protein homeostasis machinery of the cell to repair the mutant enzymes. These findings may be especially significant for patients with lysosomal storage diseases affecting the brain, for which there is currently no effective treatment.

"Our study shows that these two widely prescribed calcium channel blockers restore partial enzyme homeostasis in cell lines derived from patients suffering from several lysosomal storage diseases," said team leader Jeffery Kelly, who is Lita Annenberg Hazen Professor of Chemistry, Dean of Graduate and Postgraduate Studies, and member of the Skaggs Institute of Chemical Biology at Scripps Research.

2008 Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellows announced

Two noted New Zealand authors have been announced joint winners of this year's Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellowship. Brigid Lowry and Paula Morris will each spend 5 months in the Sargeson Centre in Auckland, with Brigid taking up tenure in February, and Paula in August. Each fellow will also receive a $20,000 grant, allowing them to focus full time on their writing.

Brigid will use her time to complete a collection of poetry and to begin a novel for adults, while Paula plans to work on her fourth novel, Rangatira, inspired by the life of her ancestor, Paratene Te Manu. This year is the 21st anniversary of the award and the 11th year of Buddle Findlay's sponsorship of the fellowship. Buddle Findlay National Chairman, Peter Chemis, says the Sargeson Fellowship is about giving New Zealand writers the freedom to craft their stories.

Adobe offers Premiere Pro, After Effects betas

Buttons, text and images are stored as layers and layer sets so you can edit them later in Photoshop.

The preview of Premiere Pro is available for Mac OS X 10.4.9.

It is available to licensed users of either the After Effects 7.0 Standard or Professional (full, upgrade, and education), Adobe Production Studio Standard and Premium (full, upgrade, and education), Adobe Video Bundle (full, upgrade, and education) or Adobe Web Bundle (full, upgrade, and education).

Not-so-fine dining cited at many top restaurants

The data were used for stories published today, and were put online with a searchable interface so readers are able to examine restaurant records for themselves.

The Union-Tribune database, which can be found at uniontrib.com/more/inspections, will be updated periodically.

For the main print story, reporters focused on 103 restaurants that made the 2008 Zagat lists for San Diego's most popular and top food-rated eateries, and places where dinner for one is estimated to cost $55 or more.

The Zagat San Diego ratings are based on surveys filled out by 2,500 customers and cover 472 eateries in the county. Zagat ratings are considered among the most democratic because they are composed of customers' experiences and not those of professional critics. Zagat restarted its San Diego edition in 2008, after a seven-year break.

Johnson Announces An Extra 4,000 Midwives For The NHS, UK

The total value of the package will be around £3,000.

Alan Johnson said:

"The number of births in England is rising. To keep pace with this increase and to improve the quality of care to mothers, we will recruit an additional 1000 midwives on our wards and in our communities by 2009, rising to around 4000 by 2012.

"Many of these extra midwives will be new to the profession, but there are also former midwives whose expertise could be brought back to the NHS given the right support. This is why we will make up to £3000 worth of support available to each returning midwife, providing free training and financial support while they study.

"In January I announced extra funding of £330m over three years for maternity services. Trusts will have access to this additional money from April to invest in expanding the workforce."

Dame Karlene Davis, General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, said:

"I welcome Alan Johnson's announcement which represents a recognition of the need to increase midwifery numbers.

They're not just pets, are they? An Ode to Oberon

They silently put up with your foibles, idiosyncratic behavior, your whims, and your ways. They react to nice attention like a magnifying mirror, returning it three times as powerfully.

14 years, and some months ago, I answered an ad, and ended up surrounded by 6 week old golden puppies. One in particular caught my eye. Actually, he refused to let me go, following me around like he would not let me leave without him. If you haven't seen a golden retriever that young and small, think of a stupidly huge, floppy ears, (almost larger than his head), a long nose, way too big for his tiny body, even more amazingly large paws, incredibly bright, big eyes, and a body that could still fit on one large hand.

Even then, a belly rub got the most incredible groan of joy, even if it sounded like a squeak.
